In this postmodern era, if you have the proper credentials (i.e., militate in the correct party) you can fake your ancestry, distort the facts of your own autobiography, campaign by innuendo exclusively, boost your résumé, brag about your bravery, build an entire writing career based on plagiarism… and get away with it.
Why?
Because it’s only your good intentions that matter. And if you say you’re a progressive, a champion of minorities and the working class, you’re already forgiven if you ever get caught with facts.
After all, there are no facts, only interpretations, as none other than Friedrich Nietzsche said.
If you “have your heart in the right place”, you have a license to deny objective reality, especially if it helps to paint your contradictors as bigoted, antiscientific, racist, sexist… you name it. The end justify the means.
Otherwise how could you say with a straight face:
“I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”
Hillary Clinton bragging about her 1996 trip to Bosnia as First Lady
“The private economy is doing fine”
President Barack Obama talking about an economy with an 8% unemployment rate.
“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.”
Nancy Pelosi, unintentionally conceding in 2010 that she didn’t knew squat about Obamacare.
“My Native American heritage is part of who I am, I’m proud of it and I have been open about it.”
Elizabeth Warren, candidate to the US Senate, in spite of being documentary proved she has no Native American ancestry at all.
“If you had a third one, then I would have said, okay, you get to say this is a special thing, a focused problem at the Law School,”
Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers denying in 2004 a big trend of plagiarism in the professorate after Alan M. Dershowitz and Charles J. Ogletree scandals. Laurence H. Tribe scandal exploded immediately.
Even plagiarism isn’t a fact, didn’t you know? Nothing is real.
